Hunting stag in Scotland is not a quest for large trophies, but a true hunting experience in the Scottish Highlands, where every hunter must cover several kilometers on foot, often with several hundred meters of elevation gain in hills and valleys. The hunting area is quite demanding in terms of physical fitness. Hunting takes place from 0 to 914 meters above sea level.
Most slopes are forested with planted spruce, but there are several places where original old deciduous forests exist. The usual occurrence of forests and thickets ranges from the sea up to an altitude of around 400 meters above sea level. Higher elevations are mostly plains covered with herbs and other plants.
Stags are primarily hunted through stalking and tracking, and they are hunted during the rut, but they can also be hunted outside of it. However, this is more complicated. Stags are mainly active at dawn and dusk. They are hunted at the upper edge of the forests, where stags come out or retreat from the plains to their cover.
The program of this hunting trip is primarily based on the hunting experience, not on the size of the hunting trophy. However, this does not mean that a strong or old individual cannot be harvested. Hunting takes place on 12,000 hectares, and there are more than enough hunting opportunities. Trophy stags are hunted from mid-September to October 20, during the ongoing rut, when there is a high probability of harvesting a strong stag according to local standards. Twelve-point stags are considered truly large.
Hinds and calves are hunted after the rut from October 21 until the end of the hunting season, which lasts until February 15.
Hunting is conducted with a local guide 1:1, but two hunters can also hunt with one guide (making the hunt cheaper per day). Organizers have up to 4 guides available, allowing for up to 8 hunters in one hunting group.
The hunting trip is not only about hunting trophy stags but also about hunting hinds and calves. Typically, a hunter harvests 1 to 2 pieces of big game per hunting day.
