Individual hunting in the Czech Republic: Part 1: High tree stand

Individual hunting is one of the traditional ways of hunting in the Czech Republic, which is a country where hunting has been shaped in the spirit of history and traditions for centuries, even millennia. Nowadays, even in the Czech Republic, a technological revolution has not been avoided, and modern elements such as night vision, thermal imaging, rangefinders, camera traps and many other conveniences have been mixed into the traditional means of hunting. These devices of modern hunting help in hunting, increase its safety and expand the hunters' possibilities. But what remained original? These are the methods of hunting and their implementation, which you will read about in this article.

Individual hunts

Individual hunts can be divided into two basic categories - waiting and shuffling. You can read more about shuffling in the article Individuální lov v česku a jeho techniky, část 2: šoulání

High tree stand hunt in the Czech republic

As the name suggests, individual stalking is about one or two hunters working together to wait for game to come within the ideal distance to be hunted. Hunters hunt from various types of perches, pulpits or shelters on the ground so that they are not seen by game. Mostly ungulates (roe deer, deer, fallow deer, mouflon or wild boar) and harmful animals (fox, badger, raccoon dog, etc.) are hunted in this way.

There are many ways to lure game to the ideal distance for hunting, and of course they differ depending on the season of hunting or the hunting of a specific game species. That is why there are hunting techniques such as luring using different types of decoys, luring the game with attractive feeding or waiting in traditional places where the game is found or passes by the hunting equipment (game walks). When hunting birds, you can also use the so-called balabans, which are mock-ups of the birds themselves.

Calling the game

Enticing game is an active way to attract selected game to the hunter. Almost any game can be lured. Of course, this method already requires certain skills of the hunter. They must know the terrain, follow the direction of the wind, because animals like to follow the wind. He must know the given species of game well. In what period to use the decoy, what type to use and most importantly, the hunter must master the decoy technique by himself in order to imitate as perfectly as possible the sound to which the game in question reacts.

With decoys, hunting is very interesting and the hunter is definitely not bored during the wait. He must lure at certain intervals, watch for possible responses from the game or watch the surrounding landscape during the lure so as not to reveal himself. If the hunter does everything correctly, he will increase the probability of a successful hunt. But even the best lure is often useless and the game simply does not respond to it. The hunter has to reckon with that too.

On the other hand, in the case of incorrect luring, be it a poorly used technique of extracting the sounds themselves, or a bad luring interval, they can scare the animals. The game is not stupid, and very often the hunter betrays it by using the wrong lure.

However, if everything goes well, the hunter will have an unforgettable experience, when he can actively communicate with the animal in this way and learn a lot more about its behavior, thereby increasing the chances of hunting in the future.

Decoys can be divided into decoys imitating the same species of game, which is mainly used during rutting of ungulates. The call of the female or male is imitated as a soka. The second use can be to imitate an animal of the same species in trouble, when other animals instinctively try to come to its aid. The third way is the imitation of potential prey, which is an attractive hunting method especially for foxes. Another possible way is to imitate the same species that are feasting, and thanks to this, other individuals of the same species can be attracted (for example, luring geese, ducks, wild boars, etc.).

Game baiting

In the Czech Republic, this is a relatively widespread method of hunting, where the hunter regularly feeds a particular species of game with attractive food and the game gradually learns to go to this place. If the animal is not stressed and exposed to disturbing elements, it will quite simply gain confidence in the baiting place and start visiting it regularly. This gives the hunter an ideal opportunity for a successful hunt, when he can see the game perfectly, aim and hunt well, because there is enough time for everything.

Of course, after a successful hunt, the game loses confidence in the place and it takes some time to return to such a feeding ground. In this way, the main game hunted in the Czech Republic is the wild pig.

Use of game corridors and staying places

All game species that are hunted have their favorite routes, which they follow regularly at regular time intervals. These are so-called corridors, when animals follow the same route, for example to places where they look for food, when they return to their shelter or go to drink, etc. Most of the time, of course, these are well-covered routes, and game hunted in this way then loses confidence in these routes and it may happen that they completely leave the given locality for a while and go elsewhere.

The site is mostly used by territorial animals that stay in the area for most of the year and do not migrate. A national example of this is the roe deer. He stays in his territory from about May to September, which he marks, marks and defends against other territorial deer. Thanks to this, it is easy to get to know these deer and determine if it is suitable for hunting or not.
