Hare hunt in the Czech Republic near the town of Křižanov in the Vysočina region will take you back to the old days when there were plenty of hares everywhere. During one hunt, 30 hares are hunted. The record is 66 hares hunted. Around 150 hares are hunted in one hunting season.
Hunters have the option of standing at hunting posts and waiting for the hounds to approach them, who are driving the hares towards the hunter. Thanks to the ubiquitous fences and overgrown boundaries, hunters must be constantly on guard, as a hare can run out in front of them unexpectedly at any moment.
Hare hunts take place from November until the end of December. Usually, there are 5 hunting parts per day.
Hunters should plan on wearing good clothing throughout the day. It is possible that December hunts will take place in the snow.
The meeting before the hunt is at 7.45 and documents are checked (insurance, gun passport, hunting license). However, upon request, a meeting at 7.00 with breakfast can be arranged..
The hare hunt begins at 8:00 a.m. with a ceremonial traditional start accompanied by trumpeters.
After the ceremonial start, the hunters will be transported on a flatbed behind a tractor to individual hunting grounds, where the hunting competition director will assign them a hunting place.
Hounds and helpers press forward and drive the game towards the hunters, who stand on the edges of the individual hunting places.
In the middle of hunt – around 10 or 11 am – there is a snack, which is provided by the provider – roasting sausages on a fire.
After the snack, the second half of the hunt takes place. The hare hunt ends around 2:00 p.m., depending on the speed of the individual hunts.
Once the last lech is finished, a ceremonial parade of hares takes place and, together with a trumpeter, a tribute is given to the hunted game according to Czech hunting traditions.
This is followed by a meal provided by the provider at a local restaurant, where hunters can spend wonderful moments with friends, discuss individual hunting opportunities, and summarize the entire hare hunt.
A keg of beer and a pig roast can be arranged upon request.
